Joel's passion for serving on the Access to Independence Board of Directors is evident in his commitment to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. With his extensive knowledge of long-term care support systems and disability advocacy, Joel brings a valuable perspective to the Board. Having managed his own staff of care providers throughout his adult life, Joel understands the challenges and complexities of self-direction. His unwavering belief in the autonomy and dignity of individuals with disabilities has been a driving force in his pursuit of empowering members of the disability community. Joel's dedication to this cause led him to obtain a Master's Degree in Disability and Human Development from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he focused on understanding and addressing the barriers and disparities faced by individuals with disabilities striving for independence. Combined with his academic understanding of the support systems of Illinois and Wisconsin, Joel's personal journey from his birthplace in Illinois to his current home in Wisconsin has given him firsthand experience with the inadequacies of state personal care systems. He has personally encountered the barriers and limitations that often hinder individuals with disabilities from reaching their full potential. These experiences have fueled Joel's determination to create meaningful change and advocate for a more inclusive and supportive environment. As a member of the Access to Independence Board of Directors, Joel is dedicated to advancing the organization's mission, providing comprehensive services and education to individuals with disabilities. His expertise and firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by those within the long-term care system make him a valuable advocate for the community. |
