#AccessEmpowerment

We've raised nearly $1000!

Thank you for supporting our #AccessEmpowerment campaign this year! We are so thankful for all the donations and general support for our mission to empower people of all ages and with any type of disability to live as independently as they choose.

This was our first ever year-end fundraiser, and we ended up receiving almost $1,000 in donations. What we received will go a long way toward supporting our many independent living programs and services. We learned a lot from our efforts this time around. The next fundraising campaign will be even better.

You can still help support our goal by giving to our general fund or sharing our cause with your network. Invite your friends to like our Facebook Page, or send them the link to our email list sign-up form. Your support will make it possible for individuals of any age and with any type of disability #AccessEmpowerment by achieving their independence goals, big or small.

We hope you’ll join us to make that goal a reality!

Support Our Mission

We have been serving all of Dane, Dodge, Green, and Columbia counties in Wisconsin for over 43 years. We've provided countless hours of support and helped thousands of people with disabilities achieve their independence goals. This Giving Tuesday,  you can help support our mission in two ways:

Our Independent Living Programs are how we support individuals of all ages and with any type of disability #AccessEmpowerment. We believe that people should be able to choose how to live, where to live, and with whom they live. Your financial gift will go toward to programs and services that make this possible for so many people in our community.

Alina

"With the help of a financial literacy class from Access to Independence, I am excited to start focusing on my money habits more. I have learned rules of thumb that I can use in making mature financial decisions. I genuinely am pleased and grateful for the opportunity to learn about the basics of finances."

Corneil

Corneil contacted Access to Independence (Access) seeking help with employment in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. With no income, and difficulty finding new work, the situation was putting his housing in jeopardy. Access assisted Corneil apply for services through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). Soon after he had started working towards his career goals, Corneil was able to land a job! Through the advocacy and services that Corneil received, he now has stable housing, stable income, and opportunities for additional training/education.

Walter

Walter is a 94 year old Navy veteran who came in to our agency to discuss which phone options would  address his communication needs with his great-grand daughters. An Independent Living Specialists at Access to Independence assisted him in our assistive phone room to suggest different phones and help him find a good match with his hearing preferences and needs.  After some demonstration, an amplification phone was provided to Walt and his family, at no charge, for him to try at home and explore the phone features before making a decision to purchase one of his own.

The Independent Living Specialist assessed his needs further and recommended that the use of laptop would  not only greatly increase Walter's ability hear and watch Youtube videos and news media, but would also be able to further improve his communication with family members via the use of an auto-captioning app.

With the services, products, and recommendations provided by Access to Independence, Walt’s quality of life and independence has already started to improve greatly!

Katie

Katie lost hearing in her right ear due to the influenza virus. She only had 10% hearing remaining in her right ear, and was waiting to be scheduled for bone conduction implant surgery to improve her hearing.

She was concerned that her surgery might be delayed due to the pandemic, and in the meantime she was looking for ways she could remain independent until the surgery. She was referred to Access to Independence (Access), who suggested she might try a set of bone conduction headphones from the Assistive Technology loan and demonstration program.

Katie tried out the headphones, and found that they allowed her to listen to music and make phone calls more independently!

But what had the most impact for her was being able to hear the voice of her baby grandson, who lives in another state. She later told the Independent Living Specialist that, “these headphones have me crying my eyes out!  I can hear the videos of my grandson making baby noises!"
